Disguise

A cut so deep
Blood spilled
Without a knife
A trust severed
By words that slice
You wear your lies
A clever cloak
To shield her eyes
But not all actions
Can be disguised
How many times
She's turned away
Creating excuses
Imagining that
You'd change
Continued acceptance
Only reinforces her pain
Hidden so deep
In the darkest place
As you palter, mislead
Day after day
She's led to believe
That somehow
She is to blame
Despite elaborate costumes
And masks you create
Everyone clearly sees
A fool
In his own parade
Time for a Change
Sunday, February 20, 2022
When did we change
Each in our own distinct way
Growing apart
While choosing to blame
Time as the enemy
Or that one awful day
Rather than face the reality
That it’s not just a phase
Change is normal
Even healthy, so they say
But I’ve been lost
Since the day
That you went away
My mind realizes
Your need to take to the sky
But a heart
Never truly learns
How to say goodbye
Did you try to show me
What my eyes refused to see
That one day
You would actually leave
If there was a way
To regress, to go back
I’d explain my reasons
For all those mistakes
That I never knew
I had made

Or a jangled mess
Thoughts racing
Inside my head
Juggling stress
Wondering at times
If my face betrays
Do my eyes
Give my true
Feelings away
Are they revealing
A vision of strength
Behind a closed door
Or the reality
Of a scared woman
Crouched like a child
In a corner
Of the floor
Each day trying
To realize dreams
Practically impossible
To keep pace
Conforming, adapting
To join the human race
With rules so difficult
To comprehend
A desperate attempt
Not to give up
In the end
If you happen
To pass me by
On a crowded street
And peer into my eyes
And think that you’ve
Seen the real me
Then you undoubtedly know
That I’m desperately
Trying again today
To prove to the world
That I’m doing okay
